History of Strayer Education, Inc.

The beginning of Strayer Education, Inc. can be traced to 1892, when Dr. S. Irving Strayer founded a small college in Maryland called Strayer's Business College of Baltimore City. From the start, the college built a solid reputation for academic excellence and student service. Over the next 117 years, the school expanded its educational programs, its enrollments, and its geographic reach as it opened 70 additional campuses in Alabama, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia.

In 1969, the school was renamed Strayer College when it received licensure to grant the Bachelor of Science degree. Authorization to grant the Master of Science degree followed in 1987.

In 1996, Strayer Education, Inc. was established in order to take Strayer College public, and raise capital for expansion.

In 1998, Strayer College was granted university status by the District of Columbia Education Licensure Commission and became Strayer University.

In 2000, Strayer Education, Inc. successfully completed a major recapitalization. This included the introduction of a new senior management team led by Robert S. Silberman, current Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Strayer Education, Inc.
